Hue is 100 km from Da Nang: about two hours over the Hai Van Pass, or an hour and a half through the tunnel. The day trip has its own article — Hue in one day from Da Nang. This one is for the longer plans.
What a night in Hue buys you
A day trip stretches to the Imperial City and one tomb. One night opens up four things a day trip cannot:
- Thien Mu Pagoda at 06:00–07:00 — mist still on the Perfume River, almost nobody there
- Two more royal tombs — Khai Dinh, Minh Mang or Tu Duc, each in a completely different style
- The Perfume River at night — Hue songs on a boat, Trang Tien bridge changing colour
- Imperial cuisine — a dinner of many small dishes, which Da Nang does not have

Two days, one night
Day 1
- 07:30: leave Da Nang over the pass, stop for photographs at Hai Van Quan
- 09:30: pause at Lang Co — lagoon and beach at the foot of the pass
- 11:00: arrive in Hue, check in, lunch (bun bo Hue, banh beo and nam loc)
- Afternoon: the Imperial City
- Evening: the Perfume River, Trang Tien bridge, songs on a boat
Day 2
- Early: Thien Mu Pagoda
- Morning: the tombs of Khai Dinh and Minh Mang
- Midday: lunch, then back to Da Nang, arriving around 15:00–16:00
Three days, two nights
Keep the two days above and give day three to one of these:
- Bach Ma National Park — forest, the Do Quyen waterfall, far cooler than the lowlands; it sits between Hue and Da Nang, so it slots neatly into the return
- Tam Giang lagoon — sunset over the largest lagoon in South-East Asia
- The Vinh Moc tunnels and Quang Tri — 70 km further north, for anyone drawn to the history; see the Quang Tri route
Four days, three nights
With four days the sensible move is not to spend them all on Hue but to make a loop of Da Nang – Hue – Hoi An:

Straight from Hoi An to Hue
No need to double back through Da Nang. Hoi An to Hue is about 130 km, three hours over the pass — the right move if you slept in Hoi An and want Hue the next morning.

Book a car on your own schedule — over the pass, stopping at Hai Van Quan and Lang Co, hotel to hotel at both ends.

Day trip to Hue, or stay the night?
A day trip covers the Imperial City and one royal tomb. One night adds two more tombs, Thien Mu Pagoda in the early morning, the Perfume River at night and Hue's imperial cuisine — which is the part that feels genuinely different from Da Nang. With only one day, accept that it is a taster.
Is the train from Da Nang to Hue worth it?
Yes, if you want the scenery and are not tied to a schedule. The railway over the Hai Van Pass is one of the finest stretches in Vietnam, and from the train you see all of it. The downsides: Hue station is a fair way from the centre and the tombs, so you still need a car on arrival, and the departure times are fixed.
Hai Van Pass or the tunnel?
The pass if you want the view — it adds 20 to 30 minutes and is the best part of the journey. The tunnel in heavy rain or fog, or if someone gets car-sick. Say you want the pass when booking, because many drivers default to the tunnel for speed.
