How Many Days in Hoi An: One-Day, Two-Day and Three-Day Plans

Hoi An is small. You can walk the old town in two hours. But "seeing it all" and "seeing enough" are different things — and the difference sits 4 to 45 km outside the old town.
One day — the old town only
- 15:00: leave Da Nang, arrive about 15:45. See the Da Nang–Hoi An route
- 16:00–18:00: the Japanese Bridge, Tan Ky house, the Fujian assembly hall, the market
- 18:00: the lanterns come on — walk the Hoai riverside, float a paper lamp
- 19:00: dinner — cao lau, mi quang, banh mi, white rose dumplings
- 21:00: back to Da Nang
Two days, one night — the sweet spot
Day 1
- Afternoon: check in, old town, heritage sites
- Evening: lanterns, dinner in town, the pedestrian streets
Day 2
- Early: the old town at 07:00 — almost empty. This is the payoff for staying
- Morning: pick one — the Bay Mau coconut forest (basket boats) or Tra Que herb village
- Afternoon: An Bang beach, then back to Da Nang

Three days, two nights — the far stops
Keep the two days above and pick one for day three:
- Cham Island — about 30 minutes by boat from Cua Dai; snorkelling. Boats often stop in rough season (October to January), so check first.
- My Son — 45 km; go early to beat the heat. See also the My Son sanctuary
- VinWonders Nam Hoi An — 20 km, good with children, a full day
Fitting Hoi An into a Da Nang–Hue trip
The most common self-guided route through central Vietnam is Da Nang – Hoi An – Hue. Three lengths:
| Length | How it splits |
|---|---|
| 3 days, 2 nights | One day each — tight, and Ba Na has to go |
| 4 days, 3 nights | Da Nang 1.5 days (with Ba Na), Hoi An 1 day, Hue 1 day |
| 5 days, 4 nights | Add a beach day, or add My Son / Cham Island |
Details in the four-day Da Nang–Hoi An–Hue itinerary. The Hue leg crosses the Hai Van Pass, so allow time for photo stops.
Getting around Hoi An
- Inside the old town — on foot only; vehicles are barred during pedestrian hours
- Out to the beach and craft villages (3–5 km) — a bicycle is the usual and most pleasant answer; many hotels lend them free
- Longer legs (My Son, Cham Island, back to Da Nang) — car with driver; see Hoi An to Da Nang and Hoi An to the airport
FAQ
How many days do I need in Hoi An?
One day covers the old town. Two days and one night is the sweet spot — it adds An Bang beach or the coconut forest without rushing. Three days and two nights is what you need for Cham Island or My Son as well.
Stay in Hoi An or day-trip from Da Nang?
Stay if you want the old town at night and then again the next morning — that is the only way to see it at 07:00 with almost nobody in it. Day-tripping from Da Nang makes more sense when Hoi An is one stop in a Da Nang trip, and when you want more choice for dinner.
What is there in Hoi An besides the old town?
An Bang and Cua Dai beaches are 4 to 5 km out, the Bay Mau coconut forest 5 km, the Thanh Ha pottery village and Tra Que herb village 3 to 4 km, Cham Island about 30 minutes by boat from Cua Dai, My Son 45 km, and VinWonders Nam Hoi An 20 km.
