Hoi An is only 30 km from Da Nang, so the weather is nearly the same. One thing differs: the old town sits on the Hoai River, which makes flood season matter far more here than in Da Nang.

What the rainy season actually does
Three specific effects, not vague ones:
- Boats to Cham Island stop in rough seas — common from October to January. Do not book island accommodation to a fixed date.
- Riverside streets can flood by tens of centimetres for one to three days in October and November. Locals move by sampan, and many visitors find it memorable — but the old houses and assembly halls close.
- The coconut forest and river tours pause when the water is high.
The full moon — the date worth planning around
On the 14th of each lunar month the old town switches off its electric lights. Only lanterns and candles, bai choi folk singing, and paper lamps on the Hoai. It is Hoi An at its best and its busiest — book the room and the car early, especially when the full moon lands on a weekend.

The old town is decorated and packed. Two things to know first:
- Many restaurants and shops close for two to four days around the first day of the new year
- Rooms and cars both cost more; book three or four weeks ahead
