Getting to Da Nang
- Flying — fastest, and the airport sits inside the city, 3 km from the centre
- Train — slower, but the stretch over the Hai Van Pass is one of the finest rail rides in Vietnam
- Sleeper coach — cheapest, sensible from Hue, Quang Ngai or Quy Nhon
- Private car — most flexible for a group that wants to stop along the way
What to pack
- High-factor sunscreen — central Vietnam's sun is stronger than it feels, especially at the beach and on the cable car
- One thin long-sleeved layer — for pagodas, for the cold at the top of Ba Na, for over-cooled vehicles
- Walking shoes — the Marble Mountains are stone steps, Hoi An is all on foot
- A light rain jacket if you travel September to December
- Motion-sickness tablets if the Hai Van Pass or the Ba Na road is on your plan
What to wear
Light, pale clothing year round. Three places to think about:
- Pagodas and heritage sites — shoulders and knees covered. Linh Ung, the Marble Mountains and Hue's Imperial City all apply this.
- The top of Ba Na — usually 8 to 10 degrees colder than the city, and often misty by late afternoon
- Hoi An old town at night — cobbled lanes; leave the heels behind

A few things to know first
- The sights are spread 8 to 40 km around the centre — you cannot walk between them, so budget for transport
- Between 11:00 and 14:00 the sun is harsh; the workable pattern is morning out, midday rest, afternoon out again

How many days do I need in Da Nang?
Three days and two nights covers Da Nang plus either Ba Na Hills or Hoi An. Four days fits both. Five is what you need to add Hue without rushing. Under three days, drop Ba Na — the drive and the cable car alone take a full day.
What should I wear in Da Nang?
Light, breathable clothes almost year round. But pack one thin long-sleeved layer: Linh Ung Pagoda, the Marble Mountains and Hue's Imperial City all expect covered shoulders and knees, and the top of Ba Na runs 8 to 10 degrees colder than the coast.
What should I bring home from Da Nang?
The easiest things to carry are dried squid, cha bo beef sausage, sesame rice crackers, tre, and coffee. Non Nuoc marble carvings are beautiful but heavy. If you buy at Han or Con market, price two or three stalls first — the spread between them is real.
