Hoi An is about 30 km from Da Nang — 40 to 45 minutes along the coast road. It is the single most asked-about journey in Central Vietnam. Here are the four ways to do it, with real prices and who each one suits.
1. Private car with driver — the easy option
Picked up at your hotel, straight through, stop wherever you like. An all-inclusive per-route fare covering driver and fuel. For three or four people it works out cheaper per head than Grab, and you never worry about finding a ride back.

2. Grab / ride-hailing
Around 350,000–450,000₫ one way in a 4-seat car. Price shown up front, no advance booking. The catch is the return: few drivers wait around the Old Town, and at peak evening hours you can wait 15–20 minutes or pay surge.
3. The yellow bus no. 1 — cheapest
About 30,000₫ each way, 60–75 minutes, running roughly 05:30 to 18:00, from near Han Market in Da Nang. Cheap, but many stops, crowded at weekends, and no space for suitcases.
4. Motorbike
100,000–180,000₫ a day plus fuel. The coastal road is genuinely beautiful and you can stop whenever you like. Not for rain, small children, or luggage. The Old Town core is closed to traffic at certain hours anyway, so you park outside.
Real cost for two people, there and back in a day
- Bus: ~120,000₫ for both — cheapest, about 2.5 hours seated across the day
- Motorbike: ~230,000₫ including rental, fuel and parking
- Grab both ways: ~800,000₫, plus the risk of waiting for a return car
- Private car return: one all-inclusive fare with the driver waiting in Hoi An — for three or four people usually cheaper than two Grabs
Day-trip tips
- Leave early afternoon: skip the midday heat, arrive as the lanterns come on
- Old Town entrance tickets are sold at booths on the approaches and cover a set of heritage houses and assembly halls
- Cars cannot enter the Old Town core — your driver drops you at the nearest lot, a few minutes' walk
- On the 14th night of the lunar month the town cuts its lights for the lantern festival — busy, but worth it
